Portsmouth & Gosport occupy either sides of the rivers mouth thus the name. Portsmouth,  commonly nicknamed Pompey.  There have been settlements in the area since before Roman times, mostly being offshoots of Portchester  a Roman base.

The Spinnaker Tower is a recent addition to the city’s skyline. It can be found in the recently redeveloped area known as Gunwharf Quays.

A significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth is home to the world’s oldest dry dock and home to many famous ships including Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory.
The naval base has declined in recent years.

Haslar Marina, Gosport is a modern, purpose-built marina on the western side of the entrance and is easily recognised by its prominent lightship. The former Camper and Nicholsons marina is a few cables north.

Accessible at all states of the tide use the small boat channel and notify QHM if crossing to Gunwharf.
